Living a Life of Adventure with an Ostomy

About

Charlotte

Hi, my name’s Charlotte. I’m on a mission to help ostomates (and the world) recognize that life doesn’t have to be limited by an ostomy. I categorize myself as an adventure-seeker and lover of the outdoors. I spend my free time roaming around Alaska with my friends, visiting my amazing family, and traveling. I have an ostomy and work as an Occupational Therapist, and I enjoy combining my knowledge to improve mine and other’s lives for the better!

Ostomy Awareness

I live with a permanent ileostomy due to Crohn’s Disease. My goal is to not let my ostomy prevent me from pursuing my passions, and to share my knowledge and experience with others so that they can do the same!

Professional Background

As an Occupational Therapist, I work in the hospital setting, helping adults rehabilitate from major illness or injury. I have a particular interest in bowel and bladder related disorders, ostomy rehabilitation, and neuro-rehabilitation.

I recently started a business, Restorative Ostomy Solutions, to help individuals feel confident and strong as they recovery from ostomy surgery. Through my business, I offer consulting/education to both ostomates and professionasl/organizations.

Through my personal and professional experiences, I have seen first-hand how a collaborative, evidence-based approach to care can positively impact health outcomes. I believe in the power of rehabilitation professionals to truly change lives through education, empowerment, creativity, and most importantly, functional activity.

What is Backcountry Ostomy?

Backcountry Ostomy is a space to empower ostomates to live an active lifestyle by providing resources through blog posts and social media. With Backcountry Ostomy, I also seek to educate rehab professionals. Through my personal experience and my work as an OT, I am able to provide a blend of current evidence based research and creative problem solving solutions for both ostomates and professionals. My goal is to expand the current knowledge base surrounding traditional physical rehabilitation, to challenge rehab professionals to seek out work with underserved client populations, and to cultivate a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to care to return individuals to functional lifestyles. The goal is to provide ostomates with the tools to live healthier happier lives.
